HOW DOES DEHYDRATION INTERACT WITH ALCOHOL? A REVIEW BY DOCTORS

Expert opinion from Dr. Anuvitha Kamath

Dehydration is defined as the loss of body fluids hampering the normal body function. It is mainly caused by hot climate and alcohol. The signs and symptoms of dehydration are dry skin, dry tongue, wrinkled skin, sunken eyes, loss of skin elasticity, absence of tears, cold clammy skin, rapid breathing, headache, fatigue, dizziness, syncope, flushed skin, low blood pressure, dry mouth, muscle cramps, dark urine, constipation, loss of appetite, and intolerance to heat. Drinking alcohol during dehydration can worsen the symptoms, as alcohol intensifies dehydration by causing loss of minerals and fluids from the body by excess urination and vomiting. This leads to confusion, low blood pressure, and passing out.

Dehydration and alcohol have a significant interaction. Alcohol is a diuretic, meaning it increases urine production, leading to fluid loss and dehydration. Dehydration can worsen the side effects of alcohol, such as hangovers, by intensifying symptoms like headache and fatigue. Additionally, alcohol impairs the body's ability to recognize dehydration, increasing the risk of overconsumption. To mitigate these effects, it's crucial to drink water alongside alcoholic beverages and maintain proper hydration to minimize the negative consequences of alcohol on the body.

Alcohol worsens dehydration by increasing urine production, causing fluid loss and symptoms such as dry mouth and dizziness. It impairs judgement, making it harder to treat dehydration. Alcohol-induced dehydration can also affect electrolyte balance, resulting in muscle cramps and weakness. Alcohol-related dehydration frequently exacerbates hangover symptoms. It's critical to consume water with alcohol and hydrate before going to bed to avoid hangover symptoms. To avoid alcohol-induced dehydration, responsible drinking and moderation are required.
