There are many causes of numbness of the limbs but it is usually due to nerve compression, damage or inflammation. It can be dangerous but that depends on the cause. Among the most common causes are: • Disc disease in the spine • Carpal tunnel syndrome • Diabetes • Toxins or medications, such as excessive alcohol, heavy metal toxicity or chemotherapy • Frostbite • Multiple sclerosis • Lyme disease • Vitamin B12 deficiency Tumors of the brain or spinal cord, stroke, or spinal cord injury are less common causes of numbness in the limbs.
Finger numbness is when there is damage or injury to nerves supplying fingers, it can happen in those with diabetes, or compartment syndrome. Sometimes it can be due to rheumatoid arthritis or stroke also. Carpel tunnel syndrome occurs due to the obstruction of main nerves in the wrist area. It can happen due to repetitive motion like using keyboards or using hand tools. Exercising hands and wrist in between work is helpful. Consult a physician as a detailed neurologic examination and ruling out diabetes is necessary.
Most common cause of hip and leg numbness is sciatica, in which the sciatic nerve is compressed, leading to neuralgia and numbness.
