What are the causes of numbness in the arm after injection?

Expert opinion from Dr. Masrath Begum
MBBS · 4 years of experience · India

The cause of numbness in the arm after injection is due to its location in the shoulder, the brachial plexus is at risk of being damaged during the administration of the tetanus shot, and other vaccinations. The first sign of vaccine-related brachial neuritis is usually tingling and numbness, or a burning sensation in the upper arm. Injections that occur below the deltoid muscle can hit the radial nerve and injections that are too far to the side of the deltoid muscle can hit the axillary nerve. If a nerve is hit, the patient will feel an immediate burning pain, which can result in paralysis or neuropathy that does not always resolve.

The causes of numb and painful hands are extremely cold weather, irritation to the hand nerves, and damage to the hand. Cold hands usually develop due to extremely cold weather. Other causes of numb hands are anemia, Raynaud's disease(disease of the upper arms' blood vessels and circulation), diabetes, burgers disease, lupus, frostbite, and scleroderma. Poor circulation in the hands can be treated by massaging the hands, wiggling fingers, running warm water on the hands, making a circular motion with the arms, getting indoors to a warmer area, avoiding sudden changes in temperature from hot to cold, avoiding smoking, and managing stress. If the symptoms are very severe, then medicines like calcium channel blockers, blood vessel dilators, and acupuncture will be required.

What can one do to stop their legs from going numb?

Expert opinion from Dr. Anuvitha Kamath
MBBS · 3 years of experience · India

There are various causes of leg numbness. The main reason is due to diabetic neuropathy, in which the foot nerves are damaged leading to tingling and numbness also known as stock and glove neuropathy. The other causes are hypothyroidism, alcoholic neuropathy, foot infections, autoimmune diseases, multiple sclerosis, and kidney failure. Tarsal tunnel syndrome-caused by the compression of the tibial nerve leads to burning, tingling, pain, and numbness in the heel, foot, and ankle. The treatment for this is mainly adequate rest. Taking medications like gabapentin and some steroids helps in reducing nerve inflammation and increases nerve strength. Along with this application of an ice pack or hot fomentation to the legs, submerging the foot in lukewarm salt water, and applying supportive braces also help in reducing leg numbness.
