Ulcerative colitis is a condition where a person's intestines can no longer work normally and optimally. People with this condition usually are also intolerant to lactose. Lactose is a naturally occurring sugar found in milk and dairy products including mozzarella cheese. If an individual with Ulcerative colitis continues to eat dairy products, they can run the risk of diarrhea, stomach pain, and bloating. For this reason, avoiding all dairy products is a wise choice to maintain their gut health.

The recommendation is not to eat in times of crisis. During episodes of crisis in people with ulcerative colitis, milk and dairy products should be avoided so as not to worsen abdominal distention and pain. There is research in Brazil with a modified Minas Frescal cheese that has shown to be able to act as a therapeutic agent in the treatment of ulcerative colitis.

Cheese is a good way for a person with ulcerative colitis or another inflammatory bowel disease to take in order to consume protein. It is better if the mozzarella is part-skim.
