20% AGREE: SURVEY FINDS WHICH EYE COLOUR PEOPLE FIND THE MOST ATTRACTIVE

The subject of eye colour always features in pieces about beauty and attraction. If it was of no importance then why would we bother with eyeshadow and mascara?

It's true that when we have children, parents are eager to see over the course of the first few months whether their blue eyes will take on a new hue, maybe going green, hazel, or grey.

They can even just change to a deeper or lighter blue, it can take up to a year to finally settle down. Parents of a couple of kids could have an even split of blue-eyed children with others having green or grey, you just can't tell.

But a survey of 66,000 has looked at the attractiveness of eye colour and the results show that 20.3% showed one that emerged as victor when it comes to what people find attractive. In relation to Ireland, because it's more prevalent here.

Eye Colour By Region

The survey was carried out by an eye care company called All About Vision based on stats about eye colour compiled by the World Atlas which looks at different aspects of people and life on the planet.

According to them, up to 79% of people in the world have brown eyes, 8% to 10% are blue-eyed, and hazel and amber stand at 5% each. Down at the rarer shades are grey at 3% and green at 2%.

You're probably scratching your head at those percentages because the concentration of blue and green in Ireland is huge, it's thought up to 86% of us and people in Scotland have those eye colours, even in Iceland it's believed to be 87%, and only a little lower in the Nordic countries.

Northern Europe

So the concentration of those eye colours is a Northern European situation. Maybe we all have the same ancestors, but as melanin is central to eye colour development maybe it has more to do with sun exposure through millennia.

Some people believe that living in intensely sunny countries the eyes may have more melanin through natural adaptation as a way of protecting them from the effects of the sun.

Living in Ireland is not going to give anyone many issues in that department, if anything we could do with a little more sun. However, in the survey, the most attractive eye colour didn't fall with brown eyes (it scored just 5.9%), and grey came in at 10.9%. The eye colour that scored 20.3% is actually one of the rarer ones.

Most Attractive Colour

You can take this in whatever way suits you, (we are only sharing the results), but blue eyes were divided into light and dark blue in the survey. Light blue scored 16.9% of the votes while dark blue 15.2%.

But it was green that got the top position with 20.3% of all those surveyed. As so many of us have blue or green eyes you could say that even though green is rarer in the world it deserves the spot at the top.

If you have blue eyes, you could also say that the real winner is blue if it hadn't been split between light and dark, together those results come to 32.1%, right? We'll let you decide for yourself if green or blue is the most attractive.
