A healthy diet is always essential, especially when fighting an illness. In general, that means a mix of lean protein, complex carbohydrates, and unsaturated fats, with plenty of fruits and vegetables. However, cancer treatments can make it harder to eat well. You might not be as hungry, have gastrointestinal problems like nausea and diarrhea, of lose you sense of taste or smell. Here are some things you can try: • Eat small meals throughout the day, rather than three large ones. Snack on nutrient- and calorie-dense foods like peanut butter, trail mix, and cheese. • Drink fluids between meals instead of during them, so you don’t get filled up too quickly. • If mouth sores make eating too painful, puree fruits and vegetables. Or drink high-calorie, nutrient-dense beverages. Avoid acidic and spicy foods, which can be painful to eat. Be sure to let your doctor know if you’re having trouble eating enough. A nutritionist also may be able to help create an eating plan that works for you.
