What happens if tonsillitis doesn't go away?

Tonsillitis means the lymph nodes called tonsils in the throat are inflamed and enlarged. Tonsillitis caused by Strep or other bacteria requires treatment with antibiotics. Without treatment, one of the tonsils can become an abscess. Rarely, untreated Strep throat infections caused rheumatic fever or kidney damage. After a bout of acute tonsillitis the infection and inflammation may be gone, but the tonsils may stay enlarged without symptoms. But some people develop chronic tonsillitis, with persistent or recurrent symptoms despite multiple treatments with antibiotics. In this case, surgery called tonsillectomy may be recommended.
