There is no specific diet that everyone with type 1 diabetes should follow. Minimize intake of simple carbohydrates. It’s important to match your caloric intake you’re your insulin needs to help maintain good control of blood sugars. One of the healthiest diets is a Mediterranean style diet, which is based on the eating habits of people who live along the rim of the Mediterranean Sea. The Mediterranean diet focuses on high, moderate, or low intake of certain foods and doesn't worry about specific serving sizes. The diet emphasizes high intake of fresh fruits and vegetables (especially leafy green vegetables), extra-virgin olive oil, whole grains, nuts, and legumes. Fish and dairy can be consumed in moderation. Sugary foods and beverages should mostly be avoided.
