Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) refers to the complex of symptoms and signs caused by compression of the median nerve as it travels through the carpal tunnel. Patients with this syndrome usually experience pain, numbness or tingling sensation and weakness in the affected hand. It is the most frequent focal compressive mononeuropathy in clinical practice. When untreated, it can significantly affect the quality of life, since pain, muscle weakness, numbness in the hands and wrists can prevent the patient from using the arm during crises, interfering with daily activities, work and hobbies. The condition can also progress to irreversible damage to the affected nerve, causing symptoms and permanent loss of functionality (loss of coordination, strength or pain).
When the carpal tunnel is not treated it causes weakness, nerve damage permanently, and lack of coordination.
